A Heritage Built on Bluegrass and Bound Books
Reading books and collecting books are two separate hobbies.
Traveling the world and collecting chunks of the world are two separate hobbies.
All of these hobbies are mine.
The rolling hills of Scott County, Kentucky, have been my home since I was a toddler. No matter where I moved throughout life, the hills always called me to return. On my mother’s side, our roots run deep here, so deep, in fact, that our family settled on this land while it was still called Virginia. I have 7 confirmed generations buried in the hills of Sadieville.
From my father’s side, I inherited an insatiable hunger for adventure and travel. When I was bound by time or budget, I would (and still) get lost in worlds held within pages. Apparently, the shared DNA of a few geologists inspired my desire to collect chunks of the world as I grew to have a vast collection of rocks that keeps multiplying.
The Seed of an Idea
The seed for the idea of the shop finally took root during a reunion with an old, dear friend, Ladybug.
Catching up, I asked her what the town was like now. She said it hadn’t changed much, it just had more people and there was still nothing for the kids to do. I thought out loud Wait, we are the grown-ups now. We should be changing that! So many of us leave… or just get lost, working to pay the bills… to survive… or to pay for a life we were told to strive for… and don’t ever attempt to answer the call of our inner child.
I bootstrapped my way into opening a place that already carried magic. Similar to the three little bears, one was too hot, one was too cold, and then a location found us that was just right.
The Constant Clearing in a Changing Forest
The building the shop is in now is one of the originals to the town and is owned by our bonus family where it has belonged for 4 generations. I work and play with my childhood friends which is a very rare gift. Our community was so small that everyone genuinely knew everyone, and whether you liked them or not, you took care of each other. In the 80s, Georgetown only had 11,000 citizens. My hometown, Sadieville only had 250. Today, Scott County is rapidly approaching 65,000 residents.
In a world that has grown so quickly, Fabled Forest grows slowly with intention – it is built to be the constant safe space for our community and it is being ran by the 8th generation from the area.
While the main focus of the shop is the inventory of several thousands of books (both new and used across all genres), it offers a reflection of nature that surrounds us with crystals, agate, Kentucky grown herbs and locally sourced honey – and local artists who hand pour intention candles, craft pyrograph art, electroplate items from nature, preserve pieces of nature in resin, craft with 4 leaf clovers, create with crystals, pottery, yarn and so much more.
Come wander through our forest. It is a place where every neighbor is welcome, so long as they are kind. We can’t wait to be a part of your story too.
